The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released updated information about people who are at increased risk of becoming very sick from COVID-19 due to having one or more health concerns. Physical Inactivity, people who do little or no physical activity, or exercise, is on that list!
Physical activity can help reduce your risk of getting certain diseases and conditions—including COVID-19. And, if you do get them, being active beforehand, can help you manage and minimize the symptoms. Additional reasons physical activity is important:
● Reducing the risk of chronic conditions: These include type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer. Diabetes and cancer are on the list of health conditions that increase your risk of contracting COVID-19.
● Sleep quality: Insufficient sleep has been linked to the development of many of the chronic diseases and conditions.
● Improving mental health and cognitive function: In addition to improving mood and reducing feelings of anxiety, physical activity can reduce the risk of depression and of developing dementia.
● Immune function: This is an area of emerging research, but evidence suggests physical activity may also boost immune function.
